The Benefits of Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractic is a regulated health profession in the United Kingdom, concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of both the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including bone or spinal manipulation or adjustments (World Federation of Chiropractic, 1999)
For over 25 years, the Clinic has conducted research based on information gathered through the use of questionnaires. Some of the comments of our patients could be used as the basis for evaluating the true effectiveness of chiropractic.
The Royal College of General Practitioners considers manipulation of the spine an appropriate course of treatment for low back pain. Clinical Guidelines for the management of Low Back Pain. (1999). Royal College of General Practitioners, London.
Chiropractic has been proven to be of more benefit and result in long term satisfaction to patients when compared to standard hospital management. Ferreira, M.L., Ferreira, P.H., Latimer, J., Herbert, R. and Maher, C.G. (2003). Efficacy of spinal manipulative therapy for low back pain of less than three months duration. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics 26 (9), 593-601.
Chiropractic is cost effective, with no waiting lists and immediate access to treatment, thereby facilitating a more rapid return to work. Meade, T.W., Dyer, S., Browne, W. and Frank, A.O. (1995). Randomised comparison of chiropractic and hospital outpatient management for low back pain: results from extended follow up. British Medical Journal 311, 349-351.
